Sandra Hatch
Batik Designs
Sandra creates her batiks on cloth, inspired by photographs she has taken during her travels and quiet moments of observation. Each piece begins with an image that captures her attention—a play of light, a landscape, a fleeting detail—and evolves into a vibrant textile interpretation rich with color and texture.
Using fabric dyes, Sandra builds layers of luminous color directly into the cloth. She then applies hot wax to preserve selected areas, carefully designing the batik through a deliberate process of dyeing and waxing. This traditional resist technique allows her to control both detail and spontaneity, resulting in intricate patterns and dynamic compositions that celebrate the marriage of image and fabric.
Her original batiks are framed between glass, allowing natural light to pass through the translucent cloth. This presentation enhances the depth and radiance of the dyes, bringing each artwork to life as it interacts with its environment.
